The basic concept of the GPS watch is that it has four modes of detecting GPS satellites to determine your position through triangulation (it needs to contact at least three satellites for this, but it can handle data from up to 8 satellites). Once your position is determined, you can have it plot directions and distance to your destination(s) and track your progress, taking measurements along the way if you like.
Most of the GPS watch models come with four GPS measurement modes: One-Shot Mode, which gets the satellite data, determines your position, then shuts down the GPS circuit; Quick Mode, which gets the data, determines your position, then leaves the GPS circuit in standby for quicker subsequent measurements; Auto Mode, which gets a measurement every minute and shuts the circuit off each time; and Continuous Mode, which measures every second and leaves the circuit in standby mode.
It is interesting to note that the battery power can last up to four hours even in the power-draining Continuous Mode, which is quite impressive. With the Auto mode, one can expect up to 12 hours of battery life, with the Quick Mode up to 5, and the One-Shot gives you about 720 measurements.
