GPS Watches for Tracking kids - Source: http://www.matthewweathers.com/year2005/road_trip.htm
Hearing about missing children is always a sad thing. Unfortunately, though, there are many cases of children getting lost in public places or being picked up by strangers. But with the emergence of GPS, parents can be more assured of their children’s safety because, now, they can track their children’s location.
The Global Positioning System, or GPS, technology was first used in cellular phones. Now a device, which can be attached to a child’s bag or clothes or even worn on the child’s belt as a pager, has been invented. GPS watches are also available nowadays, where the GPS function is included along with other features in the watch. Parents can program the GPS device to send information of their children’s location for, let’s say, every 15 seconds or so. You can even program it to send you an alert every time your child goes out of an area you indicated in the system, such as the neighborhood, school, or even the playground. Some units even have a panic button that children can push whenever they are in trouble. This will send an immediate alert to you and to the GPS tracking service so that even the authorities can be notified of the trouble.
Although it is good to have a cellular phone or watch with a GPS system, it is also good to attach a small GPS tracking unit in your child’s clothes. If, for example, your child got kidnapped and his phone or watch is thrown away, or if your child got lost and left his phone someplace else, then the GPS tracking device that is attached to his clothes can still send signals to your GPS device and you will be able to track him down.
Smaller children can have larger units which can be placed in their backpacks and can work up to 2 weeks before needing to be recharged. As for older children or teens, GPS devices can also be installed in their cars. Not only can parents track where they are, they can also see their children’s driving habits. Are they driving too fast or too carelessly?
GPS devices are definitely not cheap, especially the smaller ones which can be attached to your child’s clothes. But the assurance of knowing where your child is at any given time is worth the expensive cost. Having a GPS tracking device is probably the best thing parents can have to ensure their child’s safety.
